RESCUING LEFTOVER FOOD
Our volunteer "staff" consists of an executive director and a dedicated board of directors. We are few but mighty!
30-40% of food produced in the United States is wasted every year: 120 billion pounds (equivalent to 270 meals per person!), accounting for 22% of the Municipal Solid Waste in American landfills.
The food wasted in the United States comes from multiple sources: restaurants, caterers, food suppliers, and homes. Cuisine Rescue redistributes food from the first three sources.
According to the US Department of Agriculture, 9% of the Lowcountry's population--over 71,600 people-- is considered to be "food insecure". We aim to change that.
We're a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that rescues un-plated leftover food from restaurants/caterers/food suppliers, salvaging edible food that would otherwise be thrown away. And then delivers it, free of charge, to Lowcountry nonprofits serving the food-insecure population.
After two retirements--first from the Air Force and then from a second career in construction / facilities management--Chuck Smiley now serves the local community by rescuing and redistributing leftover food in the Charleston, SC, area. Inspired and driven by the impact his daughter's Food Rescue nonprofit (Rescuing Leftover Cuisine) has had in NYC, he's motivated to address the scourge of food insecurity in the Lowcountry and reduce the wastage of perfectly good food.
Since beginning operation in April 2022 , we've performed 1450 Food Rescues and redistributed 160,000 pounds of leftover food, enabling the creation of nearly 133,000 meals...from food that would've otherwise been thrown away!
